WRITING

6 ACTIVITY IDEAS FOR STUDENTS using the DIGITAL JOURNAL TEMPLATE for PAGES by APPLE
WRITING ACTIVITY
INDIVIDUAL
ALL LEVELS

As an Apple Teacher certified educator, I love discovering innovative ways to make learning fun and engaging! That’s why I’m so excited to share this FREE Digital Journal Template (download it here
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1C2WajHXMwNntLiPT1h86YmU3Sz9UI01C/view?usp=share_link ), a versatile resource you can use to boost creativity, language skills, and digital literacy in your classroom and easy to adapt for all age groups, levels, and topics.

Here’s a list of 6 fun activities I planned:

ACTIVITIES:

1️⃣ DAILY REFLECTION PROMPTS: use the journal template to guide students in reflecting on their day or a specific learning experience. They can type their responses or use the Apple Pencil to write, add photos, drawings, or even audio recordings to express their thoughts.
Provide prompts like:

‘What did I learn today?’;

‘What challenged me, and how did I overcome it?’;

‘What am I proud of today?’.

2️⃣ CREATIVE WRITING EXERCISES: assign a prompt, and have students write short stories or poems. They can enhance their entries with drawings, shapes, or photos to illustrate characters or scenes, add shapes for comic-strip effects, or record themselves reading their stories aloud.

Assign prompts such as:

‘Write about a day in the life of a superhero’;

‘Describe a mysterious event in your town’;

‘Imagine life 100 years from now’.

3️⃣ RESEARCH JOURNALS: encourage students to explore a topic they’re studying, such as ‘The life cycle of a butterfly’ or ‘Causes and effects of global warming’. They can gather information online, summarise findings, add hyperlinks to articles, embed videos, or other online resources, and organise ideas into sections like ‘Introduction’, ‘Key Findings’ and ‘Questions for further research’.

4️⃣ GOAL SETTING AND TRACKING: ask students to set academic or personal goals. They can create progress pages, using visual elements like graphs or timelines to track milestones.

How it works:

Students create an initial page where they list their goals (e.g., ‘Improve my math grade’, ‘Read 10 books this semester’).

For each goal, students can create a separate page with:

  • A breakdown of smaller steps;

  • Visual trackers, such as progress bars or calendars;

  • Reflections on their progress, using text or audio;

  • A final ‘achievement page’ celebrating completed goals with photos, drawings, or a written reflection.

5️⃣ INTERACTIVE LEARNING LOGS: after a lesson, students can summarise key concepts, include images or sketches, and record questions or insights for future exploration.

How it Works:

After each lesson, students create a journal entry summarising what they learned.

They can:

  • Write about the key concepts in their own words;

  • Include images or diagrams of the material covered;

  • Record questions they have or topics they want to explore further;

  • Use shapes or stickers to mark highlights or organise ideas visually.

This log becomes a valuable review tool for exams or projects.

6️⃣ DIGITAL PORTFOLIOS: students can use the journal to compile their work throughout the term, incorporating text reflections, photos of projects, and videos of presentations.

How it Works:

Students dedicate pages to specific assignments, such as essays, science projects, or art pieces.

Each entry includes:

  • A description of the assignment;

  • Photos of physical projects or embedded files of digital work;

  • Reflections on their process and what they learned;

  • Peer or teacher feedback, which can be added as comments or audio clips.

At the end of the term, students can present their portfolio to peers, teachers, or parents.

Each of these activities can be adapted to suit different grade levels, subjects, and teaching goals.
