WHAT'S THE TRUTH?
SPEAKING ACTIVITY
WHOLE CLASS + PAIR/GROUP WORK
ELEMENTARY
What’s the Truth? is a fun speaking activity that focuses on asking for and giving personal information.
Unlike many Getting to Know You activities designed to help students learn more about one another, this time the teacher is the one being interviewed! Students become the interviewers and try to discover which information about their teacher is actually true.
It is a great way to break the ice, encourage students to ask questions and, at the same time, let them get to know the person who will accompany them throughout the school year.
LESSON PLAN
procedure:
Draw three columns on the board.
Tell students that they can ask you personal questions. Encourage them to think of questions they would genuinely like to know the answers to. You should answer using only short answers or key pieces of information.
For each question, write three different answers on the board, one in each column. Two of the answers should be false and one should be true.
The important rule is that all the true answers must appear in the same column.
Continue until you have answered several questions.
Ask students to work in pairs or small groups and decide which column contains the true answers.
Finally, reveal the correct column and find out which group has discovered the real you!
Tip!
You can make the activity easier or more challenging depending on your students' level. With beginners, you may want to provide a few question prompts, such as:
🗣️ Where do you live?
🗣️ What's your favourite food?
🗣️ Have you got any pets?
🗣️ What's your favourite colour?
With more confident students, simply let them interview you freely!
