THE NEW ME
SPEAKING + WRITING ACTIVITY
PAIR WORK
ELEMENTARY
The first lessons of the school year are the perfect moment to set the tone in your classroom. A simple way to do this is through icebreakers and Get‑to‑Know‑You (GTKY) activities. They help students relax, create bonds, and encourage interaction in English right from the beginning. One of my favorite activities for this is called The New Me.
This activity:
encourages creativity: students can be anyone they want – a famous singer, a superhero, or even a classmate;
develops key skills: asking and answering personal questions, describing people, and writing short texts.
LESSON PLAN
Step-by-step procedure:
Introduction (5 minutes): tell students they will create a new identity – The New Me. They can imagine being a celebrity, a fictional character, or invent someone completely new.
Fill in the card (10–15 minutes): distribute the identity cards (free template in the material section ⤵️). Students complete the information and draw a picture of their “new self.”
Interview a partner (10 minutes): students pair up and interview each other, using the card as a guide. Suggested questions:
What’s your name?
How old are you?
Where are you from?
What do you do?
What do you like?
Do you have any brothers or sisters?
Do you have any pets?
What’s your favourite possession?
Identity swap & writing (homework): students exchange cards. For homework, they write a short paragraph titled “The New Me” describing their partner’s invented identity.
Follow‑up (optional, 10 minutes): in the next lesson, volunteers can present their partner’s “New Me” to the class.
MATERIAL
identity cards:
The New Me is simple, playful, and adaptable.
It helps students break the ice, practise useful language, and leave the class with a smile. Perfect for the first days of school!
