WHAT I ALREADY KNOW
SPEAKING + WRITING ACTIVITY
INDIVIDUAL WORK
BEGINNER
Students are often more familiar with English-language culture than they realise—from movies and TV series to books and music. In this activity, learners reflect on what they already know, share it with peers, and explore how English permeates everyday media. It’s a low-prep, engaging starter that builds speaking, vocabulary, and cultural awareness.
LESSON PLAN
procedure:
1. Individual brainstorm (5 minutes):
Ask students to silently list one or two examples under each category that have English titles, even if they know only part of it:
Films or movies (e.g. Harry Potter, Avatar);
TV series (e.g. Friends, The Crown);
Books (e.g. The Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars);
Music artists or bands with English names (e.g. Coldplay, Imagine Dragons).
2. Pair work: shared recall & translation (8–10 minutes):
Pair students up. Each student shares their examples; partners compare and translate the titles into their native language (e.g. Italian). Encourage them to discuss:
Is the translation literal?
Do they know an alternate Italian release title?
Are there notable differences?
3. Whole-class feedback & discussion (7–10 minutes):
Bring everyone together. Invite pairs to share interesting examples. Guide discussion with prompts:
Which examples were surprising?
Were translations literal or adapted?
Which titles remain the same in English even in your language?
What does this tell us about English influence in media?
Optionally, display titles on the board and highlight any patterns (e.g. film versus book translations, titles released in English only, etc.).
