PAIR WORK
PRE-INTERMEDIATE
As teachers, we know that real-life communication skills are essential for English learners. One of the most practical language functions students can develop is the ability to ask for and give advice. This lesson plan is designed to engage pre-intermediate students in interactive speaking activities where they can apply functional language in meaningful conversations!

LESSON PLAN
procedure:
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
Write on the board: ‘What do you usually say when someone asks for advice?’;
Elicit answers like: ‘You should…’, ‘Why don’t you try…?’ or ‘If I were you, I’d…’;
Write these on the board as reference.
Introducing the activity (10 minutes)
- Show the activity sheet;
- Read the scenarios aloud as a class;
- Clarify vocabulary where needed;
- Elicit a few example answers for one or two questions as a group.
Pair Work activity (20 minutes)
- Divide students into pairs;
- Each student asks their partner a question from the handout (e.g., ‘I want to improve my English pronunciation. What should I do?’);
- The partner responds with advice (e.g., ‘I think you should join a pronunciation class’, or ‘Why don’t you watch English movies?’);
- Encourage students to give multiple suggestions per scenario.
Group Activity extension (optional, 10 minutes)
- Divide students into groups of 3-4;
- Cut out the scenarios from the handout or prepare additional problem cards;
- Students take turns drawing a card, reading the problem aloud, and asking for advice;
- The group members compete to offer the best piece of advice.
Class feedback (15 minutes)
- Regroup as a class;
- Go through each scenario and ask students to share the advice they gave or received;
- Write the most creative or practical solutions on the board;
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask something like: ‘Which scenario was the easiest to solve?’, ‘Which advice do you think was the best?’;
- Reinforce the key language for giving advice.
Homework (optional)
Write a short paragraph about a recent situation where you had to ask for or give advice. What was the problem? What solution was suggested, and did it work?
Assessment
Monitor pair and group work for fluency, creativity, and use of appropriate language structures.
Evaluate participation during class feedback.
