STAND IN A LINE
SPEAKING ACTIVITY
WHOLE CLASS
ELEMENTARY
Stand in a line is a well-known activity in English language teaching. It is often used because it is very flexible and can easily be adapted or transformed in different ways. In this case, it becomes a simple ice-breaker for the first days of school, giving students an opportunity to interact with each other using minimal language.
LESSON PLAN
procedure:
Ask students to stand in a line according to one of the criteria you have chosen. For example, they could arrange themselves in alphabetical order. You can find other ideas in the MATERIAL section. ⤵️
Monitor the interaction and encourage quieter students to use complete sentences. For example:
– What’s your name?
– Daniela.
– Oh, you’re before me. I must stand here. I’m Martina.
To check the final result, ask students to form a circle and say their names in order.
