SPEAKING ACTIVITY
WHOLE CLASS
ELEMENTARY
Learning your classmates’ names during the first days of school is an important first step towards building familiarity and trust. Getting to Know Each Other is a simple activity designed to create a friendly and welcoming classroom atmosphere. But there’s more! It can also help teachers learn a little more about their students and their learning preferences through a few carefully chosen questions.
LESSON PLAN
procedure:
Ask students to sit in a circle and give them a few minutes to think of something personal they would like to share with their classmates, using one or more words. You can start with simple sentences such as Hello! I’m Silvia and I like playing football. You can find more ideas in the MATERIAL section. ⤵️
The game can now begin! The first student introduces themselves. The student sitting next to them repeats their classmate’s introduction and then adds their own. The third student does the same, and so on, until everyone has had a turn.
MATERIAL
Examples of other types of information to add:
Family
Home area
Job
Favourite thing to do when not studying
Favourite food
Reasons for learning English
Anxieties about learning English
Something really nice which has happened recently.
Tip!
Want to make the activity more challenging? Ask each student to choose a classmate who is not sitting next to them. This way, students have to make an extra effort to remember all the information shared by their classmates.
