“THIS I BELIEVE”: A CREDO SHEET TO ENCOURAGE REFLECTIVE WRITING IN CLASS
WRITING ACTIVITY
INDIVIDUAL
INTERMEDIATE
As teachers, we often spend a lot of time planning creative writing tasks that end up taking a long time to design and a long time for students to complete. However, some of the most effective writing activities are actually the simplest: the ones we can set up in just 10 or 15 minutes.
For example, it can be surprisingly powerful to ask students: “What do you believe in?”. With a question like this, we’re not just prompting them to write, we’re inviting them to explore who they are, what they value, and how they think.
This is the core idea behind the Credo Sheet, a simple yet powerful tool that helps students develop voice, authenticity, and self-awareness. It encourages them to articulate their beliefs and reflect on the experiences that have shaped them. The Credo Sheet works well as a stand-alone lesson, an icebreaker at the beginning of the school year, or a companion activity when exploring literature that deals with identity, growth, or moral conflict.
💭 What is a Credo Sheet?
A credo (Latin for “I believe”) is a statement of personal belief. The credo sheet I’ve created guides students through a five-part reflection:
What do you believe in deeply?
Why do you hold this belief?
How does this belief shape your actions or thoughts?
Has your belief ever been challenged or changed?
Final statement (one powerful sentence that sums it all up).
📋 How to use it in class
Introduce the concept: explain the idea of a credo and share examples (your own or a few short statements).
Brainstorm: give students a few minutes to jot down their beliefs (small or big, serious or light-hearted, it doesn’t matter).
Write: hand out the worksheet and let them work through each prompt at their own pace.
Share: students can read their final statements aloud in pairs or to the class, depending on comfort levels.
Reflect or display: collect the work, or create a class display titled What We Believe.
