Creating a class contract encourages students to think about the behaviours and attitudes that can help create a positive learning environment.
Our Class Contract is designed to raise students’ awareness of the importance of shared rules and responsibilities. The goal is not simply to decide what students should do, but to create an agreement that applies to everyone in the classroom... including the teacher!
What can we expect from our teacher? And what can the teacher expect from us?
By discussing these questions together, students can contribute to creating a positive, respectful and supportive classroom community.
This activity can be adapted for students of all ages and can be carried out as a whole-class discussion combined with pair work.
LESSON PLAN
procedure:
Draw two columns on the board and give them the following headings:
THE TEACHER | THE STUDENTSIntroduce the idea of creating a class contract containing rules and commitments that apply to both the teacher and the students.
Ask the class to suggest some ideas. For example:Make the lessons interesting.
Come to class on time.
Do our homework.
Bring the materials we need.
Listen when someone is speaking.
Respect each other.
Divide the class into pairs and give each pair a copy of the template available in the MATERIAL section below. ⤵️
Ask students to choose and write six important rules or commitments they think should be included in their class contract.Bring the class back together and ask the pairs to share their ideas.
Discuss the different suggestions and decide together which rules should become part of the final contract. You could also ask students to vote for their favourite ideas.Create a final poster entitled: OUR CLASS CONTRACT.
Add the agreed rules to the poster and, just like a real contract, sign it!
The teacher can sign under the Teacher column, while students can add their signatures under the Students column.
Display the contract in the classroom as a reminder of the commitments everyone has made throughout the school year.
